Rajko Mitic the captain of Yugoslavia hit his head on a metal pin while exiting the tunnel onto the field. He urgently needed medical attention. The referee decided to start the match without Rajko Mitic. Zlatko Cajkovski became the captain of Yugoslavia. Rajko Mitic entered the game 7-8 minutes after the kick-off. Yugoslavia missed the first goal, playing with ten men.
Yugoslavia goalkeeper Srdjan Mrkusic played until 26 minutes in a white sweater and white shorts. The Brazilians also played in exactly the same color uniform. The referee then allowed the goalkeeper to put on a different jersey. Srdjan Mrkusic continued the match wearing a red jersey with the number 3 on the back. Yugoslav defender Branko Stankovic played with the same number, but in a blue jersey.
